Women's Tennis Advances to Horizon League Quarterfinals

INDIANAPOLIS - The Green Bay women's tennis team, seeded eighth in the 2008 Horizon League Championship, tallied a key upset Friday afternoon in the first round of tournament action. The Phoenix topped fifth-seeded Youngstown State 4-3 to advance to the quarterfinal round. Laura Bartingale came up big for the Phoenix, as she rallied from a first-set deficit to claim a three-set win at No. 5 singles for the decisive match. Bartingale topped YSU's Irena Lanc 3-6, 6-2, 6-1 as Green Bay moves on to take on No. 4 seed Cleveland State Saturday at 10:30 a.m. EST. Green Bay claimed the first point of the day with wins at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles for the cumulative doubles point. At No. 1 doubles, Emily Lawent and Lauryn Grimando notched an 8-6 victory while Kelly Stadum and Bartingale were 8-4 winners at No. 2 doubles. In singles play, Lawent won in straight sets at No. 1 singles, 6-2, 6-3, while Grimando also tallied her second victory of the day with her 6-2, 7-6 (7-4) result at No. 3 singles. Youngstown State kept it close with wins at No. 2, No. 4 and No. 6 singles, but could not get the decisive fourth point. |
