Seven-Run Second Lifts Green Bay Softball to Victory
May 9, 2008 CHICAGO - Green Bay's run through the Horizon League Softball Tournament continued, as the Phoenix cruised past second-seeded Valparaiso by an 8-1 final score on Friday evening. Earlier in the day, the Phoenix stayed alive with an 8-0 blanking of Detroit. Green Bay hurler Anna Bluemel again had an outstanding performance. The senior dominated the Crusaders, allowing just three hits and one run while striking out a season-high 10. She lowered her Horizon League Tournament earned run average to a miniscule 1.17 over four starts (24 IP, 4 ER). The Phoenix (13-24) hung a 7 on the board in the top of the second, the team's highest scoring inning of the season. Green Bay totaled just three hits in the frame, but was aided in part by a pair of Crusader errors, a pair of fielder's choice mistakes, two walks and a hit batter. In all, Green Bay sent 12 batters to the plate in the frame. Jenna Woepse paced the Phoenix offensively, as she went 3-for-5 with a run scored and an RBI. The senior is now batting .571 for the tournament, and is one of five Green Bay players hitting at a .300 clip or better. Valpo had jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the opening inning on a two-out home run. The Crusaders closed out their season with a 30-19 record. A Green Bay victory puts the Phoenix into a 9 a.m. Saturday game against host school and No. 4 seed Loyola. The winner of that game will play at 11 a.m. against fifth-seeded UIC. Provided that the Phoenix keeps winning, the team could play a total of four games on Saturday and a championship game on Sunday. --www.uwgbathletics.com-- |
