April 17, 2008

GREEN BAY, Wis. - The Green Bay women's basketball team announced its postseason team honors for the 2007-08 season at its annual awards banquet. Lone senior Kayla Groh and junior Rachel Porath were recognized as the team's co-most valuable players by their teammates. It was the first MVP honor for both Groh and Porath.

Groh led the Phoenix in scoring, averaging 13.9 points per game. During the season, she became the 24th player in school history to reach the 1,000 point plateau for her career. Groh broke the barrier on Feb. 24 in a win over UIC, a game in which she tied her career high with 24 points. She was honored by the Horizon League as a member of the all-conference second team.

Porath earned first-team All-Horizon League honors, as she finished the season tied for second on the team in scoring, averaging 13.3 points per game. The junior also ranked among the nation's leaders in three-point percentage for most of the season.

The team selected junior center Lavesa Glover as its most improved player. Glover increased her scoring average by nearly five points per game from a year ago, as she finished the campaign tied for second on the team in scoring, totaling 13.3 points per contest.

Freshman guard Chelsea Lyons was recognized as the inaugural winner of the Phoenix award, which honors hard work and being a good teammate.

The Beth Gantz Award, which goes to a senior member of the team who demonstrates a high level of leadership and sportsmanship, was presented to Groh. The award is given in the honor of Gantz, a pre-law honor student and Phoenix fan who passed away in 1982.

Groh also received the JoAnne Jennings Memorial Award, which is given annually to the junior or senior with the highest cumulative grade point average and is named after Jennings, a former adviser in the Academic Advising Office who was a founding member of the women's basketball team's Cage Club. She passed away in 1995 at the age of 45.

The 2007-08 Phoenix, under first-year head coach Matt Bollant, posted the fifth-highest win total in school history, finishing with a 26-6 record.
